Philippine Airlines: Seven Decades of Philippine Flights

Philippine Airlines, the Philippine’s flag carrier — and has been flying Philippine flights for more than 60 years– boasts of a lot of distinctions. Philippine Airlines, or PAL, is Asia’s oldest carrier still operating under the same name. It also became the first airline from Asia to cross the Pacific Ocean. This started when PAL was chartered to 40 American servicemen to California via Hawaii. This also signaled the start of regular Philippine flights from Manila to San Francisco. The year was 1946.

Today, Philippine Airlines boasts of a total fleet of 46 aircraft. 17 of these are modern wide-body aircraft and an all-Airbus fleet of 21 narrow-bodied passenger aircraft. Philippine Airline’s domestic Philippine flights is one comfortable way of getting around the Philippine islands.

Domestic Philippine flights to the Visayas

It is easy to reach most of the Visayan islands. The best bet is the Mactan-Cebu International Airport that accommodates flights coming from most Asian cities like Seoul, Korea; Singapore; Osaka, Japan; Hong Kong; Taipei; Kota Kinabalo; and others. There are also several secondary or domestic airports that serve domestic Philippine flights like the one in Palawan, in Aklan, in Samar, Bohol, etc.

Speaking of Bohol, there is a joke about this island that says it submerges several inches every month of May. May is fiesta time in Bohol where (another joke – or is it real?) during this month, at any given day, there would always be a fiesta somewhere around the island.

The Boholanos can be considered some of the tribes in the country who puts a lot of importance to their fiesta celebration. It is not uncommon for many Boholanos to make it a point to come home to Bohol every month of May for this series of fiestas. As the locals agree, you will never go hungry in Bohol during this month as the residents are known to invite anyone, even strangers or passersby to come and partake of their food. Word has it that the owner of the house would take offense if one refuses an invitation.

So if you go fiesta-trekking in Bohol, it would be better for you if you limit what you eat at the first several houses that you enter – expect to be invited to more households along the way. You don’t want to bloat like a bullfrog in a single day, would you?

Tropical Paradise that is Boracay

Boracay is another interesting destination that you can reach through one of the domestic Philippine flights. Just 200 miles south of Manila, Boracay is a world-renown tourist destination for it white sand beaches, crystal blue waters, excellent water sports facilities, great accommodation, and a great nightlife.

International beach sports events dot the calendar in Boracay. The famous Asian Windsurfing Tour favors Boracay as a venue. Another notable event that is scheduled is the 2014 leg of the Asian Beach Games that is organized by the Olympic Council of Asia.
